Exploration and experimentation are key ingredients in effective product development. Exploration means the team ventures into unknown directions, and so the path to building a great product can be unclear to stakeholders at certain points.  Having a design process is crucial, it gives the team a map, with goals to reach along the way to shipping the product.  This helps the team members understand how their roles contribute, and helps the team stay lean and efficient.
